Shaking intern, and resident vampire buff, Francesca Macchiavelli shows lovers and haters of the Twilight series that perhaps we do have something in common, the music behind it all. That said, for better or worse, we wonder…. Can Stephanie Meyer be considered a shaker? And if so, how do we feel about that?

In a highly unlikely feat, Fever Ray’s Karin Dreijer Anderson manages to be creepier than Nick Cave in this cover of “Stranger Than Kindness.” That deep, growly, coldly mechanical voice? Yeah, that would be Karin singing, thanks to the vocal manipulation software she favors. Accessible and transparent it’s not—after all, this is the woman who rarely reveals her face, performing in elaborate masks and make-up—but the knotty, twisty darkness of the music possesses a singular charm for those who choose to listen. And don’t bother trying to figure out what the hell is going on in this video, or any of her videos, for that matter; just watch them and hope you don’t have nightmares afterwards.

This past Saturday night, fifty-plus hearty spirits crowded the Mediator Fellowship Hall in Providence, RI, braving the churlish end-of-February weather for a night of shiny music, shimmering poetry and shaking prose. It was shaking’s maiden voyage public-wise, a shakingdown cruise so to speak. Everyone survived. Yea, I dare say even flourished__ to the delight of the writers and presenters (Jericho Brown, Marita Andrade, Jo-Ann Reid, R.A. Stovetop Lawson, Liz Carter, Scott Duhamel and shaking editor Mr. Don), and a trio of fine singer/ songwriters (Mark Cutler, Chris Monti and Anthony Loffredio). The next one’s already on the drawing table; check these pages for announcements of more shaking evenings to come.

I’ll say this: I took guitar lessons at the age of 5 and have been playing and writing songs for the 45 years since. From L.A. punk/pop band The Spoilers, to folky trio Show of Hands, to folk/rock group Uma- with four solo records along the way… I’ve been semi-retired for the past ten years, [...]
Yeah, I’m in this band. Wilde at Heart. It’s this whole David Lynch / Oscar Wilde thing. Either you get it or you don’t.
The name is mine; in the sense that I made it up. More than that: I dreamed it. I fashioned it out of my creative consciousness. I’m a bass player. I play the bass.

The new album, Razzmatazz, includes sixteen songs that were written and recorded over the course of three weeks.
You can ask anyone and they will tell you that I’m an optimist. I have the ability to make friends with douche bags and assholes and frequently, I have given money to the most sickly drug addicts and drunks begging on the street. Some people think it’s wrong, but I say, “So What?” Just like Miles Davis. Forget about lending, I believe in giving. I wrote a song about that.
