Interesting change, there. When I was a kid, everybody took a foreign language before college. Of course, the preferred foreign language was French, "the international language." But by the time I was in graduate school, French had ceased to be the international tongue; English had replaced it. My own kids learned Spanish and Italian, and both served them better than French served me.
