MotesBooks Publishes Second Volume in the Popular Motif Anthology Series

Louisville, Kentucky—MotesBooks has released the second volume in the Motif series of anthologies, each of which is focused on a particular motif or theme. Edited by Marianne Worthington, communication and journalism professor at University of the Cumberlands, the second volume is entitled Motif 2: Come What May, An Anthology of Writings about Chance.

“Volume 2 in the Motif series includes poetry, song lyrics, fiction and nonfiction, and each piece uses ‘chance’ as a motif, either prominently or in artfully subtle ways. The collected work of the 136 writers represented in this second volume is a testament to how often we mark our lives by some accident, fluke, or happenstance,” Worthington said.

Neela Vaswani, prize-winning fiction writer and author of the multi-genre memoir You Have Given Me A Country, writes “Here are brief encounters that sprout generations; split seconds of ruin; sudden migrations, lust, and strife. These pieces remind us to cling to life’s lessons with grace and humor.”

The anthology features writings by both established and emerging artists, including Joseph Bathanti, Tara Betts, Cathy Smith Bowers, Joyce Dyer, Randall Horton, Silas House, Marilyn Kallet,  Karen Salyer McElmurray and shaking like a mountain’s Wayne Cresser.

Award-winning novelist Janice Eidus (The War of the Rosens) suggests: “Take a chance on Come What May. You won’t regret it. With remarkable insight and intelligence, 136 talented writers across a broad spectrum of geography, generations, and genres delve deeply into the meaning and nature of synchronicity, coincidence, fluke, fate, bashert and kismet—and the very enigma of human existence. Come What May is an important book for anyone interested in understanding humankind today, individually and collectively—and why we act, think and feel as we do.”

“We are really pleased with this beautiful book,” said MotesBooks publisher Kate Larken. “It holds high quality writing on a variety of chance-related topics from diverse writers. We’ve already seen keen interest among readers who relate both to its theme and to the very fine authors included in it.”

“People are already looking ahead to Volume 3 in the series,” Larken added. The theme for that collection will be work. A call for submissions will go out soon, the publisher noted, with Worthington continuing her role as editor for the third Motif anthology. “Marianne Worthington has proven that she fully understands the Motif concept, which makes her the perfect collaborator and shepherd for the project. With her editorial contributions, she took Volume 1, on the motif of music, to an even higher level than we originally envisioned, so we’re very excited that she has agreed to continue to help us develop this series,” Larken said.

Volume 1 of the Motif Anthology series (Writing by Ear: An Anthology of Writings about Music) was published in 2009. Both anthology volumes are distributed by Ingram, can be ordered through the publisher, or are available in bookstores and online.
